The Baby Turtles’ Journey at Night
The following story is from Follow the Moon Home,
which is a non-fiction book written by Philippe Cousteau and Deborah Hopkinson.
The book is based on a true story of a group of children who started a campaign to help baby turtles.
My name is Vivian.
I just moved to a town by the sea.
One Saturday night, I went to the sea with my mother and we took a walk around the beach.
There, many baby turtles were crawling out of their nests built in the sand.
I asked my mom, “Are those cute baby turtles trying to find their way to the sea?
But they seem confused and lost.”
My mom answered, “Baby turtles follow the moonlight to go to the sea.
But they are going the wrong way because of the bright lights from the beach houses.
When they cannot find their way to the sea, they die.”
I felt so sad.
I wanted to help the turtles.
Next Monday at school, I told the class about the poor turtles.
My classmates all felt sorry for them.
We made a “Save the Turtle Campaign” group.
Our group was not certain about what to do, so we brainstormed solutions.
“People should know about the problem,” I said.
Samson suggested, “Why don’t we invite neighbors to a town meeting?”
Rebecca agreed, “That’s a good idea!”
All in the group did their part in preparing for the meeting.
Rebecca made posters and Samson put them up in the neighborhood.
Max spread the word on the Internet.
I wrote about the town meeting in the local newspaper.
On the meeting day,
On the meeting day, the town hall was full of neighbors.
Our group explained to them that the baby turtles lose their way because of the bright lights from the houses.
They all talked about how to save baby turtles.
Many volunteered for starting a campaign to turn off lights at night.
Others agreed to patrol the beach together and protect the nests.
I went on a turtle patrol with my classmates and volunteers.
Everyone smiled because the lights along the beach went out one by one.
The shining moon was bright like silver.
Soon, tiny turtles crawled out of the nests.
Then, the turtles moved slowly over the sand and disappeared into the sea.
We remained silent with wonder and followed the moon home just like the turtles.
